Privacy policy

Suggest a Domain checks whether names are free to register as domains and usernames. We built it to work without knowing who you are, and to never keep the names you search. This page explains exactly what happens to your data.

The short version

• We don't ask you to sign up, and we don't use tracking or advertising cookies.
• We don't keep the names you search, and we never register, sell or share them.
• When you click a Register link, we count the click (which registrar, which domain ending, website or AI assistant), never the domain or who you are.

Names you search

To answer whether a domain is free, we have to ask the organisations that run domain names. Each name you check is sent to:

• Domain registries, through their public lookup service (RDAP), for example Verisign for .com.
• Cloudflare's public DNS, for domain endings without a registry lookup service.
• Fastly's Domain Research API, when enabled, to detect premium prices and domains listed for sale.
• GitHub and npm, only when you check usernames.

These requests come from our servers, not your browser, and don't include anything about you. Results are cached for about 10 minutes, keyed only by the domain name, so repeat checks are fast. We don't store searched names anywhere else, and we don't log them.

Using Suggest a Domain from an AI assistant

If you connect us to Claude, ChatGPT or another assistant, the assistant sends us the names to check and we reply with results. We handle those names exactly as above. The conversation itself stays with your assistant's provider and is covered by their privacy policy, not ours.

Register and buy links

Register and buy links go through suggestadomain.com before sending you to a registrar or marketplace such as Porkbun, Namecheap, Afternic or Sedo. Some of these links are affiliate links: if you buy something, we may earn a commission. For each click we record only the partner, the domain ending (like .com) and whether you came from the website or an AI assistant. Once you're on the partner's site, their privacy policy applies.

Your IP address

Your IP address is used briefly to limit how many requests one visitor can make, which protects the service from abuse. We don't store it. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes requests to run and protect the site, as described in Cloudflare's privacy policy.

Cookies

The public site sets no cookies. The private admin area uses Cloudflare Access login cookies for the site owner only.

How long things are kept

• Cached domain results: about 10 minutes.
• Click counts: kept by our analytics store for a limited period (currently about three months), then deleted.
• Error logs: kept for a few days to fix problems. They don't contain searched names.

Your rights

Because we don't hold personal data about visitors, there is usually nothing for us to show, correct or delete. If you have a question or a request about your data, email hello@suggestadomain.com and we'll answer.

Changes

If we change how we handle data, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
